What are some proposed reasons that the BMI has gone up?

What are some examples of food and familiarity?
Naples had a famine. Ireland sent over potatos. People didn’t know how to eat em. Died
Bengal had a rice shortage. Was sent wheat. didn’t know how to eat it. Lots died.
What is an eating disorder?
It’s described as:
Maladaptive and persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, emotions, and ability to function in important areas of life
What are some causes of eating disorders?
Social/cultural factors
genetic factors
What is anorexia nervosa? What is it called when you have a distorted body image?
associated with low body weight and an intense fear of gaining/weight/drive for thinness
Places a high value on controlling their weight and shape
Distorted body image -> body dysmorphia
What are some health outcomes associated with anorexia?
Bone loss
kidney failure
heart failure
amenorrhea (cessation of menstrual cycle)
death
psychological problems
What is Bulimia Nervosa? What are the 2 subtypes of it?
Bulimia Nervosa is binge eating with behaviors to compensate for the large amount of food consumed (through purging, laxatives, exercise, etc)
Could also lead to a fear/avoidance of gaining weight
subtypes: Puring types and non-purging types
What are some health outcomes associated with Bulimia?
Kidney failure
heart failure
tooth decay
psychological problems
What are the three parts of the brain involved with sex?
Nuclear accumbens, Amygdala, and Hypothalamus
What does damage to the hypothalamus vs Damage to the amygdala/nucleus accumbens result in for sex?
Damage to hypothalamus: has motivation, loses ability
Damage to amygdala/nucleus accumbens: Loses motivation, has ability
What are male androgens and female Oestrogens? What reactions do they have on genders?
Most common androgen for male is TESTOSTERONE
Most common estrogen for women is ESTRADIOL
Giving a gender (male/female) the opposite gender’s hormone (giving male estrogen and female testosterone) causes their HYPOTHALAMUS to light up.
What does heteronormative mean? Is there a GAY gene? Does conversion therapy work?
Heteronormative: Assumes the default of heterosexuality (attracted to opposite gender)
There is no gay gene, and conversion therapy doesn’t work
Is homosexuality a choice? What causes it?
Homosexuality is not a choice. The structure of the brain (hypothalamus and amygdala) affects.
They hypothalamus and amygdala are similar in size and effect to your sexual orientation.
Does sexual orientation equal gender identification?
No. Transgender individuals also have secual orentations that are consistent with their sexual preferences.
What does it mean to be cisgender? What is gender dysmorphia?
Biological sex and your identification match.
When your gender identity is at odds with your biological sex and it causes DISCOMFORT
