When do we conform?
Conformity is high when:
- There is a group of 3+ people
- everyone agrees
- feeling incompetent/insecure
- admire group status
- no prior commitment to response
- culture emphasizes social respect
What are the 2 main types of social influence?
Approval motive: We want approval from other people
Normative influence: We want to be good group members; what are other people doing and we do it to fit in.
- BEHAVIOUR CHANGES BUT ATTITUDE REMAINS THE SAME
Relating to the other 2 main types of social influence, what is informational influence?
When you are not sure what behavior is appropriate, so you look to others and copy their behaviors
What is social facilitation and social inhibition?
Social facilitation: what you do well, you will do better around others
Social inhibition: What you do bad will be worse around others
What is social loafing?
The phenomenon where people work less in the presence of other people.
Due to:
- accountability (for easy tasks)
- Proportionality (If rewards are spread equally)
- The more group members, the larger the social loafing
Decrease for difficult tasks where efforts are anonymous
What is groupthink?
when a group reaches a consensus about a decision to keep HARMONY
- ignore / silence people who disagree
- people feel that they cannot disagree
- leader that is respected
- feels morally superior
