( SOC10 ) Flashcards
How can we prevent injury?
Correct application of the principles of training
Correct application and adherence to the rules
Use of appropriate protective clothing
Checking of equipment and facilities
Use of a warm-up and cool-down
Why do we need the correct principles of training?
Ability and fitness levels will vary greatly in sport. Therefore, it is
important to group performers of similar ability to ensure balanced
competition.
You will also need to apply the correct principles of training to avoid
overuse injuries
What does RICE stand for?
Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate
What do we rest?
Do not play for 48 hours
How do we ice?
For 20 minutes at a time, 4 to 8 times a day
Why do we compress?
To help reduce swelling?
How do we elevate?
Elevate the injured limb 6 to 8 inches above the heart.
What is a dislocation?
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position.
What is a soft tissue injury? ( joint )
prone injury because movement outside of their normal range. They can be a tear or overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage
What is a sprain?
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted or overstretched ankle.
What is a strain?
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon. ( golfers elbow, tennis elbow )
What is a Torn Cartilage?
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long-term overuse. They are tears at the joint
What are the 4 type of fractures and how do they happen?
A fracture is a broken or a cracked bone. There are several types of fractures
including:
● Stress fractures (overuse injuries): They can happen as a result of fatigue.
● Compound fractures: the broken bone protrudes through the skin.
● In closed: the skin over the break is not damaged.
● Simple fracture: takes place with no displacement of the bone.
What are abrasions?
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface e.g. a concrete playground or artificial pitches.
What is a concussion?
An impact to the head causes unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss.
What is an overuse injury?
An injury which is caused over time, e.g a torn cartilage from long term use.
What is an acute injury?
A one time injury which happens instantly, e.g a broken bone.
