What are the 6 skill related components of Fitness?
Reaction Time
Balance
Agility
Power
Coordination
Speed (ABCPRS)
Agility
The ability to change position and control the body at speed.
What sports require Agility?
- Rugby player need agility to run fast and switch their direction without falling over.
Balance
Being able to keep the body stable while at rest or on the move.
Static Balance and Dynamic Balance
Static - Keeping the body stable while stationary. E.g Doing a handstand
Dynamic - Maintaining a controlled stable position. E.g Hammer throwing
Coordination
Ability to use two or more body parts together.
What are the 4 or 5 types of coordination?
Foot eye coordination (when taking a touch in football)
Chest eye coordination (when chesting the ball in football)
Thigh eye coordination (when fighting or moving away in boxing)
Head eye coordination (when heading the ball away in football)
Hand eye coordination (when rebounding a shot in squash)
Power
The ability to undertake strength performances quickly.
Formula: Power = Strength x Speed
Sports that require power
• Sprinter driving out of the blocks
• Discus Thrower throwing the discus
Why may athletes use power?
Athletes may use power to propel themselves or an object.
Reaction Time
The time between a stimulus and a movement in response to it. In most sports, the signal for a reaction is a slight stimulus e.g. a ball or a shuttlecock.
Speed
The rate at which an individual can perform a movement or cover a distance.
