Complex carbohydrate
(starch)
are found in natural foods, such as bananas, brown rice, wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, nuts and potatoes.
Foods of this type help to provide energy for exercise and should form about half of your daily intake.
Simple carbohydrate
(sugars) are found in their natural form in fruit and vegetables, and in their refined form in biscuits, cakes, chocolate and confectionery.
Fats
Fats are important because they provide energy and, together with glycogen, help muscles to work.
Protiens
Proteins are important to help build muscles and to repair damaged tissue.
Vitamins
Vitamins come in two groups; water-soluble vitamins (that can be dissolved in water) and fat-soluble vitamins (that can be dissolved in fat). This is one of the reasons you need fat in your diet.
Minerals
Minerals are essential for a healthy body. Two key minerals you need as a sportsperson are calcium and iron.
Water
Water accounts for around half of your body weight. It holds oxygen and is the main component of many cells. It transports nutrients, waste and hormones around the body and controls the distribution of electrolytes (or body salts).
Fibre
Fibre (roughage) adds bulk to food and aids the functioning of the digestive system.
