Soc 16 Flashcards
Veins
• Veins carry blood into the heart
• Veinshave much thinner walls, are less elastic and carry blood at a lower pressure
• Veins contain many valves which helps deoxygenated blood flow to the
heart
Capillaries
Capillaries are microscopic vessels - just one cell thick
• Atone end, capilaries cary oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and
nutrients to the muscles
• Althe otherend, they cary deoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products and taking them around the body to dispose of them
• Capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
Arteries
Arteries take blood away from the heart
• Arteries have thick walls and are more elastic than veins as they carry blood which is at a higher pressure than veins as they carry oxygenated
blood
• The channel the blood flows through, called the lumen, can widen to allow more blood through when you so that when you exercise, it can reach the working muscles
• The pulmonary artery is different from other arteries as it carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
Systolic phase
• The first phase is known as the systolic phase o This where bodis pumped from both atria into the ventricles (lub),
• Then both the ventricles contract (dub).
Diastolic phase
• The second phase is known as the diastolic phase
o This is when the heart is relaxing and refilling with the atria with
blood.
Red blood cells
Transports oxygen from the lungs to the body, they contain haemoglobin which stores oxygen in the blood cells, long distance events
White blood cells
Defence system of the body, fight infections and diseases.
Platelets
Formed in bone marrow, help blood clot and reduce bleeding, firs line of defence,
Plasma
Take nutrients, hormones, protiens to parts of body which need it most, helps remove waste products
Immune system
Structures and processes in your bodybtp stopndisease
Thrombolinase
Substance invokved in blood clotting
Serotonin
Triggers Clotting process
Plasma
Fluid partbof blood
Erythrocyte
Red blood cell
Haemoglobin
Red protien in blood transports oxygen
