What do anabolic steroids do?
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle growth
What are the benefits of anabolic steroids?
Increases muscle mass and develop bone growth increasing strength
What are the side effects of anabolic steroids?
Increases blood pressure. Increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and muscle injury
What do beta blockers do?
They are used to control the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect.
What are the benefits of beta blockers?
Increase steadiness and precision
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
Nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and night mares
What do narcotics/ analgesics do?
Affect mood and behaviour, including drowsiness and pain relief. A nalgesics: painkilling/ pain relief
What are the benefits of narcotics/analgesics?
Pain relief. Can allow an athlete to return from an injury quicker
What are the side effects of narcotics/ analgesics?
Loss of concentration, balance or coordination. Emotional affects including hallucinations.
What do peptide hormones do?
Increases the number of red blood cells in the blood and aids recovery from injury
What are the benefits of peptide hormones?
Increases muscle growth, assists recovery from injury, allows the body to carry out extra oxygen
What are the side effects of peptide hormones?
Blood becomes thicker making it more difficult to pass through the capillaries and increase the risk of a heart attack
What do growth hormones do?
Used to increase the muscle development
What are the benefits of growth hormones?
Increases muscle growth
What are the side effects of growth hormones?
Minimal side effects
What do stimulants do?
Effect the central nervous system increased mental and/or physical awareness.
What are the benefits of stimulants?
Increases alertness enabling people to think more quickly
What are the side effects of stimulants?
Insomnia,irritability,irregular heart beat, increase heart rate and blood pressure
