What are PED’s ( Performance Enchaning Drugs )
PEDs are substances that can be taken in a variety of ways to produce expected and welcome physical and / or physiological effects.
What are anabolic steroids ?
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscle girth.
What are beta blockers ?
Drugs that are used to control the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect.
What are diurets ?
Used to increase the amount of urine production and to increase kidney function.
What are narcotics ?
They affect mood and behaviour, including drowsiness and pain relief. .
What are peptide hormones ?
Used to increase the number of red blood cells in the blood. Increases muscle growth and aids recovery from injury.
What are growth hormones ?
Used to increase their muscle development (very similar to steroids).
What are stimulants ?
Drugs that have an effect on the central nervous system, such as increased mental and/ or physical alertness.
What are some common benefits of PEDs ?
Increase muscle mass, growth, bone development, reaction time and quicker recovery rate
What are some common side effects of PEDs ?
Risk of heart attacks, strokes, insomnia, cramps, headaches, dizziness and high blood pressure
Why do people take PEDs ?
- Some people are encouraged to do so by their coaches or fellow athletes.
- The reward of winning (Gold medal in some sports is said to be worth a million dollars in endorsements).
- Improves their performance during sporting activities
What athletes would take anabolic steroids ?
Bodybuilders and those who are trying to improve body aesthetic
What athletes would use beta blockers ?
Snooker players as they would have increased concentration and focus during competions
What athletes would use diurets ?
Boxers and fighters who want to lose weight before competitions
What athletes would use narcotics ?
Injured athletes who are trying to avoid losing game time due to injury
