Soc 10: Preventing Injuries Flashcards
What does RICE stand for
Rest

Compression
Elevate
Soft tissue injury
Joint injuries - Frequent repetitive exercises can often result in injury to joints
Sprain
Damaged ligament - Falling or landing awkwardly
Strain
Twist, pull or tear of a muscle or tendon - Sprinting or other explosive movements
Torn cartillage
Damaged elastic substance which lines adjoining bones - Often due to wear and tear from long-term overuse
Fracture
Broken or cracked bone - Occurs from a blow, severe twisting or wrenching of a joint
Dislocation
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position - Hard blows which causes one of the bones to be displaced
Concussion
Symptoms include: headaches, loss of coordination, confusion or slurred speech - Normally caused by a blow to the head
Abrasion
Friction of the skin against a rough surface - Can happen from a fall or as a result of tackle
What are the four types of fractures
● Stress fractures (overuse injuries): They can happen as a result of fatigue.
● Compound fractures: the broken bone protrudes through the skin.
● In closed: the skin over the break is not damaged.
● Simple fracture: takes place with no displacement of the bone.
How to prevent injuries
-Correct application of the principles of training
-Correct application and adherence to the rules
-Use of appropriate protective clothing
-Checking of equipment and facilities
Use of a warm-up and cool-down
