Soc 10 - Preventing Injuries Flashcards
Soft tissue injury
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particular injuries because movement outside of their normal range can tear or pull tendons, ligaments, muscle and cartlage.
Sprains
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted ankle.
Strains
A strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon. Most common strains are in the back and the mastrings. Two examples of strains are golfers elbow and tennis elbow.
Torn cartilage
Cartillage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact in the bones while reducing the frictionnduring sports/activity. Damage to cartillage often occours due to wear and tear from long term overuse.
Fracture
A fracture is a borke or a cracked bone. There are several tyles of fractues including:
Stress fracture, compound fracture, inclosed fracture, simple fracture.
Dislocations
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position. Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes one of the bone to be displaced.
Symptoms: deformity and swelling of the joint which is locked out of position.
Abrasion
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface e.g. a concrete playground or artificial pithces.
Can occur from a tackle lr just simply falling over during a game of football rugby or hockey.
Concussion
Concussion is an injury normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports.
Symptoms: Headaches, weaknes, loss of coordination or balance, confusion or slurred speech.
5 ways to minimise injury
1) Correct application of the principles of training.
2) Correct application and adherence to the rules.
3) Use of appropriate protective clothing.
4) Checking of equipment and facillities.
5) Use of warm-up and cool-down.
