Soc 10 Flashcards
What are the 5 injury preventions?
Principles of training
Warm up/cool down
Checking equipment
Protective equipment and or clothing
Playing to the rules of the game
Why do we play to the rules of a sport?
To avoid injury and make sure everyone is playing fairly to the same rules
Why do we wear protective equipment/clothing?
To stop injury and damages to the body in sports such as cricket
Why do we check equipment and facilities?
To ensure safety and to remove any unwanted/dangerous items that are on the pitch or personal equipment
How does a warm up/cool down prevent injury?
Warm up: perform a light aerobic activity to increase blood flow to working muscles and stretch those muscles to prevent injury
Cool down: gradually reduce the level of activity to help with the disperal of lactic acid and avoid muscle stifness
What does RICE stand for?
Rest: stop playing
Ice: the cold can provide pain relief and limits swelling by reducing blood flow to the injured area
Compression: use pressure to hold the ice pack on the injury, this also limits swelling.
Elevation: raise the injury. If possible keep the area at or above the level of the injured person’s heart as this will minimise swelling.
How do principles of training prevent/cause injury
Ability and fitness levels will vary greatly in sport. Therefore, it is important to group performers of similar ability to ensure balanced competition. You will also need to apply the correct principles of training to avoid
overuse injuries.
What are the 8 types of injuries?
Soft tissue
Torn cartilage
Fracture Broken
Dislocation
Concussion
Abrasion
Whats a strain?
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon.
Whats a sprain?
A sprain is a damaged ligament
What is torn cartilage?
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from
long-term overuse. They are tears at the joint.
What is a fracture?
What are the different types of fractures?
A fracture is a broken or a cracked bone. There are several types of fractures
including:
● Stress fractures (overuse injuries): They can happen as a result of fatigue.
● Compound fractures: the broken bone protrudes through the skin.
● In closed: the skin over the break is not damaged.
● Simple fracture: takes place with no displacement of the bone.
Whats a dislocation?
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is
forced out of its normal position
Whats an abrasion?
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a
rough surface
What is concussion and its symptons.
An impact to the head causes
unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss.
