Small Intestine Flashcards
Where does the small intestine extend from?
The pylorus of the stomach to the iliocecal junction.
What are the three parts of the small bowel?
The duodenum, the jejunum and the ileum.
What are the 4 parts of the duodenum?
The superior, descending, inferior and ascending parts.
How is the superior duodenum attached to the liver?
By the hepatoduodenal ligament.
What is present on the descending duodenum?
The major duodenal papilla - an opening for bile and pancreatic secretions to enter.
Where do the duodenum and jejunum meet?
At the duodenojejunal flexure.
Where is the ileocecal valve?
At the ileocecal junction - prevents reflux of material into ileum.
How is the jejunum different to the ileum?
Located in the upper left quadrant, has a thicker intestinal wall, longer vasa recta, fewer arcades and redder in colour.
What is the arterial supply of the duodenum?
Proximal to major duodenal papilla = gastroduodenal artery.
Distal to major duodenal papilla = inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery.
What is the arterial supply of jejunum and ileum?
The superior mesenteric artery.
What is the venous drainage of he jejunum and ileum?
The superior mesenteric vein. This united with the splenic vein at the neck of the pancreas to form the hepatic portal vein.
