Male Reproductive System Flashcards
How does the descent of the testis occur?
Begins at week 6-10 of embryological development. Testes are guided from the abdomen to the normal position by the gubernaculum.
What are the three parts of the epididymis?
The head, body and tail.
What is the name of the serous sac which enclosed the testis?
The tunica vaginalis - an outpocket of the peritoneal cavity.
How are the testicles thermoregulated?
Cremaster muscles pull testes closer to the body, dartos muscle causes wrinkling of skin of the scrotum, pampiniform plexus cools the arterial blood entering the testes.
What are the three layers of fascia of the testes?
External spermatic, cremasteric, internal spermatic.
What are the three cylindrical bodies of erectile tissue in the penis?
Two bodies of corpus cavernosa, one body of corpus spongiosum.
What are the efferent ductules of the male duct system?
The epididymis, ductus deferens, and ejaculatory duct.
What are the accessory glands of the male reproductive system?
Seminal vesicles (posterior to bladder, empty into ejaculatory duct)
Prostate gland (below bladder, surrounds urethra and ejaculatory duct)
Bulbourethral gland (near bulb of penis, empties into urethra)
What is varicocele?
Veins of the pampiniform plexus dilate due to absence of competent venous valves in spermatic vein.
What is testicular torsion?
An acutely painful scrotum, due to no cremasteric reflex.
Where is the sacrotuberous ligament?
From the sacrum to the ischial tuberosity.
What are the muscles of the pelvic floor?
Levator ani muscle (puborectalis, pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus) and the coccygeus muscle.
What are the pelvic wall muscles?
The piriformis and obturator internus muscle.
What are the two areas of the male perineum?
The urogenital and anal triangle.
What is contained in the male deep perineal pouch?
The external urethral sphincter, deep transverse perineal muscles, and the bulbourethral gland.
