What does the colon do?
Absorbs water and ions from digested food to form faeces.
What are the 4 parts of the colon?
Ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid.
Where does the transverse colon begin?
At the right colic flexure of the ascending colon.
Which ligament attaches the transverse colon to the diaphragm?
The phrenicocolic ligament.
Which part of the colon is intraperitoneal?
The transverse colon.
What attaches the sigmoid colon to the posterior pelvic wall?
Mesentry - the sigmoid mesocolon.
What are omental appendices?
Small pouches of peritoneum attached to the colon, filled with fat.
What are the teniae coli?
Three strips of muscle attached to the colon, run longitudinally.
What are haustra?
Sacculations which occur when the teniae coli contract.
What is the blood supply of the ascending colon?
Ileocolic and right colic arteries - derived from superior mesenteric artery.
What is the blood supply of transverse colon?
Right colic, middle colic and left colic arteries.
What is the blood supply of descending colon?
The left colic artery.
What is the blood supply of sigmoid colon?
The sigmoid arteries.
What is the venous drainage of the ascending colon?
Ileocolic and right colic veins - empty into superior mesenteric vein.
What is the venous drainage of transverse colon?
Superior mesenteric vein.
