Small Group: STDs, UTIs, and PID Flashcards
What is the adnexa?
Uterus and fallopian tubes
What diagnostic test is best at detecting UTIs?
The presence of greater than 10^5 CFUs/mL
Urinary catheters are usually colonized within about _____________.
one month
What are some sequelae of PID?
Infertility
Ectopic pregnancy
Recurrent salpingitis
What are the most common etiologies of genital ulcers and how can you distinguish them?
HSV: extremely painful, “punched-out” ulcers
T. pallidum: painless ulcers (chancre)
Haemophilus ducreyi: painful ulcers with lymphadenopathy (chancroids)
You suspect a patient has primary syphilis. What test should you do first?
Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) screening test
If this comes back positive, then do the Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody test (which can confirm the diagnosis).
What is the first-line treatment for syphilis?
Benzathine penicillin (aka penicillin G)
If someone is allergic to penicillin, what treatment should you administer?
Doxycycline
What is a CAUTI?
Catheter-associated UTI
Some bacteria may show up as resistant (by the lab’s report) but then still be killed in giving it to a patient with a UTI from that bacteria. How?
Resistance is defined as bacteria being able to survive in concentrations at the upper limit of toxic concentrations in the blood. Some antibiotics can get concentrated in the bladder at levels much higher than this and thus kill “resistant” bacteria.
