Small gear
Definition of Small Gear
Small Gear refers to miscellaneous tools and items of equipment that are essential for firefighters to tackle both emergency and non-emergency tasks.
Daily inventory - Things to check
Appliance is in operational condition (oil, water, lights etc)- Operation of the Pump - inspect the Appliance for any body damage - Missing equipment - use inventory sheet- Operate and clean all equipment as per individual specifications
Making-up - definition and what is involved
Cleaning and re-stowing after an incident or exercise- ‘strip’ only one appliance at a time to ensure one appliance is fully stowed and ready to respond to another call as required - Let motor drivers know if you took something off their truck - Equipment can be coloured coded to their corresponding appliance - All gear must be cleaned, dried, re-gassed as necessary - Replace all used equipment and dispose of things necessary when you get back to station
Re-Stowing - definition and what is involved
Swapping your appliance for a spare (due to fault or service) including any small gear required onto the replacement vehicle to make it fully operational- Full inventory check is required - Generally spare appliance only requires cabin gear and BA’s. Some other items would be gas detectors and thermal cameras, radios - Make note of all transfers to it can be returned on the mainline applicance- Make other shifts aware of this- Check operation and condition of the appliance- check operation of fitted radios
Fault Reporting (5 R’s)
- Report - Report to SO 2. Rectify - Fix it at station (if possible) 3. Replace - Replace or exchange 4. Repair - Talk to TOSS or brigade workshops to arrange repair 5. Re-stow - May be necessary depending on the situation
