Ropes and Knots Flashcards
Ropes and Knots
What is the construction of the rope?
Synthetic Polyamide kernmantle construction.
Kern is the core of the rope - extruded filaments
Mantle is the exterior and its for protection - woven braided sheath
Line terminology - what is a loop and bite?
Standing Part: The part of the line that is fixed.
Running End: The free end of the line.
Bight: The part of the line between the two ends in which the line is doubled. When forming a bight, the line is not crossed.
Loop: Formed by crossing the line over on itself.
A Round Turn: One complete line revolution around an object.
Dressing a Knot: The orientation and tightening of all the knot parts so it is rendered ready for use.
5 Requirements of a knot?
- Serve purpose
- Easy to tie
- Easy to untie
- Not damage the line
- Be identifiable
Long lines - size, length, purpose and safe working load?
- 13mm diameter
- Approx. 15m long
- General purpose line to loft equipment
- Safe load at 500kg
- breaking strain 4000kg
Pocket lines - size, length, and purpose and safe working load?
- 6mm diameter
- Approx. 3m long
- Secure hose to ladder, secure ladder head or any other general-purposes.
- 100kg SWL
Rescue lines - size, lengths, and purpose?
- 13mm diameter
- 50, 100 or 200m lengths
- Rescue only
Causes of deterioration of lines?
- *1. Mechanical**
- External wear (Dragging line)
- Internal wear (Repeated kinking/dragging, grit in fibres)
- Local abrasion (rough edges, sharps)
- Cuts, contusions
- Overloading
- *2. Chemical**
- Chemical attack
- Acids/alkali/bleaches/solvents
- Mildew
- Heat
- Sunlight
How do you avoid deterioration?
- Store away from generators, batteries, industrial processes
- Wash and dry lines that have been in mud, sand or grit
- Store away from sunlight and heat
- Store in bags
- know the causes of damage and avoid them
How to you wash a line?
- Cold soapy water (mild soap)
- Agitate line, don’t leave to soak
- Rinse with fresh water
- No bleach or solvents
- Dry away from direct sunlight
How do you inspect lines
Look and Feel e.g. changes in Diameter, discoloration, kinks, cuts, exposed fibres, stiffened fibres
Purpose of a Half Hitch
The half hitch is not a true knot but forms the basis of a number of different types of knot.
but used tohold equipment vertical when hauling aloft or lowering
Purpose of Overhand knot
identify a damaged hose where it is tied at the nearest end of the damaged section or area
Purpose of Figure eight knot
acts as a stopper
Purpose of clove hitch
Hauling equipment aloft, secure head of ladder
Purpose of Round turn and two half hitches
Securing a line to a spar or round object, tying off a suction line
