Sleep recovery patters Flashcards

1
Q

To what extent does a person need to repay a sleep debt?

A

They will require extra sleep, but the amount of sleep does not need to be fully made up for. Usually, one (or sometimes multiple) nights of longer and good quality sleep can relieve the symptoms.

Q

What do the Gardiner and Tripp case studies suggest about the amount of time needed to catch up after total sleep deprivation?

A

1st night: shorter sleep onset (earlier), more time asleep and more SWS - major improvement in mood, cognitive and physiological functioning.
2nd-3rd nights: sleep is longer than usual but doesn’t fully repay sleep debt; REM rebound occurs.
