Temporal Lobe Flashcards
Define: primary auditory cortex
Receives and processes different features and types of sound from both ears.
What is meant by “features of sound?”
Frequency (ie. pitch) and intensity (ie. loudness). Different parts process different features.
What is meant by “types of sounds”
Verbal and non-verbal
verbal processed in left PAC and vice versa
What may damage to the primaryauditory cortex cause?
Forms of deafness
What is the association area responsible for?
Processing LTM’s, object and facial recognition; visual perception
Roles of the left temporal lobe - the effect of damage?
Language comprehesion - Wernicke’s aphasia
Roles of the right temporal lobe - damage?
Recognising songs, faces, paintings; inability to recognise these.
Define: Wernicke’s area
Comprehending speech, in particular interpreting the sounds of human speech and the meaning of language.
Locating appropriate words from memory to express intended meanings
Where is wernicke’s area located?
Left temporal lobe, under PAC.
2 functions of wernicke’s area?
- Speech comprehension: interprets the sound of human speech (can’t understand speech w/o it)
- Locates appropriate words from memory to express meaning verbally
How do Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas communicate?
THrough a bundle of nerve fibres
