How does sleep effect our physical and mental health
~ restored body tissues ~increases immunity to disease ~ keeps your mind alert ~helps process memories ~ enhances your mood
Difference between rem and non rem sleep
(R.E.M= rapid eye movement sleep)
Non-REM= eyes do not move while sleeping and
REM sleep= active state of sleep (eyes do move) deeper state of sleep
4 stages of sleep
- Light sleep : breathing + heart rate slows down (1-7 mins)
- Sleep Swindles: muscle tension + body temp decreases (~20mins)
- Begin showing delta wave patterns (waves are large and slow)
- Deep sleep: body is extremely relaxed respiration+blood flow to the brain decreases
Insomnia
A disorder where one cannot fall asleep/stay asleep
Narcolepsy
(Rare) individual falls asleep during regular activities in the daytime
Sleep apnea
A disorder where a person stops breathing during sleep
Sleep walking
A person is mobile and may perform actions during “deep sleep”
