What changes in sleep are associated with aging?
amount, quality, and sleep disorders such as insomnia
What are the stages of sleep?
- light sleep– between awake and asleep
- onset of sleep– regular breathing and HR, lowering of temp
3 and 4. deep sleep– restorative, BP drops, breathing slows, cell growth and repair occurs
- rapid eye movement sleep– dreaming, about 25% of sleep, about 90 min after falling asleep
Define insomnia
a subjective perception of insufficient or nonrestorative sleep. 3 types are: sleep-onset, sleep-maintenance and nonrestorative
Define sleep apnea
a condition in which people stop breathing while asleep
a decrease in resp rate while sleeping is called hypopnea
What are the two types of sleep apnea?
obstructive– obstruction of the upper airway
central– CNS or cardiac dysfunction
Define restless legs syndrome
a sensorimotor neurological disorder characterized by the uncontrollable need to move the legs, often accompanied by discomfort in the legs
Define rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder
a sleep disorder that is common in older adults that is characterized by the loss of normal voluntary muscle atonia during REM sleep and is associated with complex behaviour while dreaming
What are some nonpharmacological therapies for sleep disorders?
behavioural therapy, relaxation techniques, temporal control (limit napping), sleep restriction therapy, exercise and light therapy
