Define activities of daily living (ADLs)
those tasks necessary to maintain one’s health and basic personal needs
Define instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)
those tasks necessary to maintain one’s home and independent living, such as shopping, cooking, etc.
Define report by proxy
one person (the proxy) answering questions or providing information for another person, based on the first person’s knowledge of the second person
What are the 3 approaches used for collecting assessment data?
self-report, report by proxy, and observation
What is the acronym FANCAPES used for?
prioritized assessment that is especially useful for assessing frail older persons
What does FANCAPES stand for?

What are the IADLs?
using the phone, travelling, shopping, preparing a meal, housework, taking meds and managing money
What is the up and go test?
a basic evaluation of functional mobility– measures the time needed to rise from a chair, walk 3 meters, turn around, and then return to a seated position
Describe the Mini-Mental State Examination
MMSE– was the first tool developed to screen for cognitive deficiencies such as those that occur in dementia or delirium
it tests selected aspects of mental status, including orientation, short-term memory and attention, calculation ability, language, and construction
Describe the clock drawing test
a tool to identify the severity of cognitive impairment– this test requires the tested person to have some manual dexterity
the person is presented with either a blank piece of paper or a circle and is asked to draw the face of a clock
Describe the Mini-Cog assessment
a tool used to determine a person’s cognitive status, it combines one of the functions tested by the MMSE (short-term memory recall) with the executive function tested by the clock drawing test
Describe the Montreal Cognitive Assessment
designed to detect mild cognitive impairment consists brief 30 point test that takes 10 min to complete– assesses orientation, short-term memory, executive function, language ability, and visuospatial ability
Describe the Cognitive Performance Scale
used in residential care to assess memory impairment
Describe the Delirium Index
measures the severity of delirium based on the observation of a patient
Describe the Mood Measures assessment
assesses mood and especially screens for depression
