Define culture
learned and transmitted beliefs, as well as information and values that shape attitudes and generate meaning among member of a social group
Define determinants of health
factors and conditions that influence the health status of individuals, communities, and populations
Define ethnicity
the cultural, racial, religious, or linguistic traditions of a people or country
Define ethnocentrism
the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s ethnic group, accompanied by the devaluation of other groups
Define health disparities
differences in health status that occur among population groups defined by specific characteristics (socio-economic status, gender, race, etc)
Define health literacy
the degree to which individuals have the ability to obtain, process, and understand the basic information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions
What is the difference between an interpreter and a translator?
