Q

REM (rapid eye movement)

A

Rapid eye movement lasts 90-120 minutes. occurs during the second haf of the sleeping cycle, after the unitial stahe of NREM (N1).

Restore brain functions such as memory and concentration

Q

Nauturally occuring alternated state of consciousness (NASC)

A

NASC involves physical and pyschological chnages that occur automatically and reproduce beyond concious control

E.g dreaming

EMG / Muscles

A

detects, adds and records eletricl actvity of the musces that indicate changes in the muscles movements and tention

small eletrodes on muscles to detect eletrical signals generated during musces contractions

Q

Circadian Rhythm

A

Automatic chnages in bodily functions Influenced by our internal biological clock. Occuring as a 24 hour cycle. Causes us to be awake and sleep at different times during day.

15
Q

Sleep Wake Cycle

A

The natural biological rythm of transitioning into sleep and wakefulness over 24hr period

16
Q

Ultradian rhythm

A

short cycles that occur withiness less thab 24hr and dertmines rhe timing and duration of sleep stages. Also reguates circadian rhythm

17
Q

Suprachiasmatic nucleus

A

regulates tje timinig and acticity of sleep-wake-cycle. Receives information about the amount of light from the eyes and sends messages to oineal gland to release melatonon into blood

(low light - more sleepy)

18
Q

Partial sleep deprivation

A

Getting some sleep in 24hr period but less that required for optimal daytime functioning

19
Q

Full/ Total sleep deprivation

A

Going without any sleep in 24 hr period

20
Q

Melatonin

A

hormone released by the pineal gland that causes drownsness and helpes regulate sleep-wake cycle

20
Q

Affective

A

persons behavioural responses that relate to the display and control of emotions and feelings

21
Q

Behaviour

A

The voluntarily and involuntary responses of an individual to external and internal generated stimuli

21
Q

Cognitive

A

Understanding of how people’s thoughts, memories beliefs affects their emotions, attitude and begvaiour

22
Q

Advance sleep phase syndrome (ASPS)

A

circadian rhythm sleep disorderwhere sleep pattern is significabtly earlier (by at least 2 hours)

Resulting in sleepness and early moirning insomnia (inability to sleep)

22
Q

BAC (blood alcohol conncetration)

A

the amount of alcohol present in the bloodstream

22
Q

Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS)

A

a circadian rhythm sleep disorder where sleep pattern is significantly later (by at least 2 hours).

Causing alterness and performance during day

23
Q

Shift work

A

Shift work is the hours of paid employmnet rgar are outside of normal working day (9-5)

24
Q

Bright light therapy

A

a treatment for cicadian rhythm disorders which exposes people to intense but safe amount of artificial light to help sync their sleep-wake-cycle with normal external day-night sleep

(CR?)

25
Q

Sleep hygiene

A

a set of behavioural habits to manage insomnua (inability to fall asleep) and improve sleep patterns

26
Q

Zeitgeber

A

an external cue such as lighty and tempreture that influences the timining of biological clock
