Memory Flashcards
(28 cards)
Encoding
the conversion of information into a useable form so it can neuroogically stored in meory
Rehearsal
Consolidation
the neurobiological process of making newly from memory
Retrieval
the recovery of stored information and bringing ito conscious awareness for use
Storage
?
Sensory memory
the entry point of memory where all sensory memory information is detctedfrom the environment
Short- term memory
a system with limited storaged capaity where information is stored for a short time -
maintains information in conscious awareness
Long term memory
a memory that holds an unlimited amount of information for very long time (possibly permently)
Also explicit and implicit
Implicit
a long term memory that does not require conscious or intentional retrieval (memory without awareness)
E,g name, adresss
Explicit
long term mermoy that can be consciously retrived ( memory with awareness)
Semantic
long term explicit memory of facts and knowledge about the world
Episodic memory
long term explicit memory of peronally experienced events associated with particular time and place
Procedural memory
long term implicit memory of skills that have been learned previously
Capacity
the amount of information a memory storage system can hold
Hippocampus
a structure in the medial temporal, responsible fot formation, encoding and consilidation of new long term explicitly memories
Duration
the lenth of time or how long memeory storage system (long/short-term) can hold a memoery for
Basal ganglia
a group of struture deep within the brain, involved in generating voluntary movements and long term implicit memories involving motor skills
Amygdala
Involved in emotional reactions particulary fear and anger
Neo Cortex
largest and most evolved par of the brain’s cerebral cotext - invooved in higher cognotove fuctions such in language, attention
Cerebellum
structure at the base of the brain, invoved in coordination of muscle movements, cognitive process
- formation of long term mototr skill memories
Imagined future
Imagining what the night occur in the futiure
Alzheimer’s disease
a disorder causing memeory decline and deterioration of cognitive and social skills and personalituy changes
Aphantasia
the abstence of visual imagery
Acronym
pronounceable words formed by it’s first letters
