Sleep Flashcards
Sleep stage N1 EEG?
low frequency, low-voltage
Sleep stage N2 EEG?
sleep spindles & K copmlexes
Sleep stage N3 EEG?
Delta waves
Sleep stage REM EEG?
Like N1 (low frequency, low voltage), but has eye movements and chin activity.
Changes to sleep pattern with age?
Less deep sleep, more fragmented. Earlier sleep & wake. REM remains constant.
Definition of apnea during sleep?
Decrease in air flow by 90% for 10 seconds.
Definition of hypopnea during sleep?
Reduction in air flow associated with desaturation (4%) or arousal.
Definition of RERA (Respiratory Effort Related Arousal)
Reduction in air flow (like hypopnea), but without desaturation, but does have arousal.
Definition of RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index)?
AHI + RERI (Respiratory Effort Related Arousal Index)
Medical & sleep comorbidities that should prompt in-lab PSG instead of HST?
- Medical: HF, hypoventilation syndromes, COPD
- Sleep: Insomnia, RLS, narcolepsy
Effect of bariatric surgery on AHI in OSAS?
Improves AHI
Breathing pattern due to opioids?
Biot’s pattern - ataxic breathing pattern.
Treatment of Cheyne-Stokes ventilation in HF?
Treat HF. Don’t use NIPPV, especially not BiPAP ASV. O2 may help stop cycling.
How long do symptoms have to persist to diagnose central hypersomnelence disorders?
3 months
Diagnostic criteria for narcolepsy type 1?
-EDS over 3 months
-Either:
A) cataplexy + MSLT<8min or 2 SOREMS
B) CSF Hypocretin <110
