skin structure and growth Flashcards
stratum corneum
(horny layer) the epidermis outter layer (made up of mostly keratin)
barrier function
the complex layer of lipids (fats) produced by the skin to help make it protective water resistant layer
stratum lucidum
the clear translucent layer under the stratum corneum it consists of the small cells through which light can pass
stratum granulosum
(granular layer) is the layer of the epidermis composed of cells that look like granules and are filled with keratin
stratum germinativum
(basal cell layer) epidermis deepest layer
papillary layer
dermis’s outer layer
dermal papilae
ridges and grooves that attach to the epidermis
tatctile corpuscles
Nevers endings that are sensitive to touch pain heat cold and pressure
reticular layer
deeper layer of the dermis that supplies the skin with oxygen and nutrients (in this layer- blood vessels, lymph vessels, sebaceous (oil) glands, sudoriferous (sweat) glands, hair follicles, arrector pili muscles, nerve endings.)
subcutaneous layer
last layer
subcutataneous tissue
(adipose tissue or subcutis tissue) fatty tissue below the dermis
sabaceous gland
oil glands
sudoriferous glands
sweat glands
collagen
form and strength
elastin
gives the skin its flexibility and elasticity
