What happens to nails as we age?
Become more brittle, thinner, weak and prone to splitting
What happens to hair as we age?
Loss of body hair, graying, balding
What happens to sweat glands and sebaceous?
Sweat glands - secretion decreases (impaired thermoregulation)
Sebaceous - decrease sebum production (dry skin)
What happens to dermis as we age?
Decreased thickness, collagen and elasticity
What happens to epidermis as we age?
- reproduction of cells decrease
- slower inflammatory response to promote recovery
- decreased moisture content
Genetic influences that cause risk factors for skin?
Skin cancers more common in light skinned, haired, eyed person
Discrimination that causes risk factors for skin wellness?
Racial discrimination can cause lack of screening/assessment for skin cancer
Sociocultural influences that can cause risk factors for skin wellness?
- cultural trends of over washing
- use of harmful soaps
Environment influences and health behaviours that can cause risk factors for skin wellness?
- sun exposure
- smoking
- emotional stress

- delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to skin problems (regeneration of skin takes 2x as long for 80 year olds compared to 30 year olds)
