What is cultural awareness?
Acknowledging that there are differences between people (can’t improve without acknowledging)
What is cultural sensitivity?
Understanding that there is a difference, and also that these differences may be important
What is cultural competence?
Ability of healthcare providers to understand, respect, and effectively respond to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients from diverse backgrounds
What is cultural humility?
Lifelong commitment of self evaluation and self critique. Willingness to learn about others cultures
It’s about understanding that no one can be fully competent
What is cultural safety?
Ensures services are delivered in a manner that respects and acknowledges the cultural identity and beliefs
What are health inequities?
Preventable and injust differences in health outcomes
Examples of where health inequities are found?
Among racial, ethnic, gendered, disabled minorities
How can we reduce health inequities?
- cultural safety
- cultural competency
- barrier identification
Vulnerability for indigenous older adults?
- poverty, shelter, sanitation/water, food insecurity
- violence
- higher rates of: mental illness, suicide, substance use disorder, HIV
History of trauma for indigenous older adults?
- cultural genocide
- residential schools
- discrimination in health care system
- historical or intergenerational trauma
Older adults with developmental disabilities history of trauma?
- institutionalization
- forced sterilization (assumed asexual, unfit to be a parent)
Health inequities older adults with disabilities face?
- discrimination
- missed screening for disease
- 5x more likely to have mental illness than non disabled
- poor access to health promotion/disease prevention education materials
