- Perimenopause, menopause, post menopause
- decreased estrogen
- estrogen becomes derived from fat and skin tissues (whereas prior to menopause it was derived from ovaries)
- vaginal dryness
- atrophy (reduce in size) of sexual organs
- increased stimulation for orgasm
- increased potential for infection
- raised vaginal pH
What is dyspareunia?
Painful intercourse because of dryness/atrophy
Age related changes that affect sexual function in older men?
- decline in testosterone production (starts at 25)
- more stimulation required for ejaculation
- greater time required between ejaculation
- slower and less forceful ejaculation
- testes atrophy and soften
- decrease sperm mobility (not sperm count)
Effects of dementia on sexual expressions?
- capacity to consent is effected
- sexually inappropriate (ex: public masturbation)
- hyper sexuality
- loss of sexual desire

- encourage intimacy from family/friends
- provide privacy for masturbation
- promote privacy/autonomy in consensual relationships
