What are the three functions of the skin?
Protection, Thermoregulation and sensation
What are the three layers of skin?
Epidermis->Outlayer/ top
Dermis->Middle layer
Subcutaneous tissue->Beneath dermis
Identify the components of each layer of the skin?
Epidermis- top layer, large amount of keratin. Melanocytes found in layer contains skin pigment called melanin
Dermis-second layer, dense connective tissue, contains blood and nerves, Oil and sweat glands.
Hypodermis- Fat layer,protection, insulation energy, connection between skin and underlying structures of the body.
What are the three accessory organs of skin?
Hair, Nails and Glands
What is a cyst?
Sac pocket w/ fluid, around other substances
What is fissure?
Small deep cracks in the skin
What is a Ulcer?
Loss of tissue from epidermis and dermis lesion often weeping and bleeding
What is a vesicle? (Blister or chicken pocs)
Elevated, thin walled lesion containing clear fluid.
What is wheal? (Hives)
Swollen papule or plaque redder or paler compared to other skin
What is Seborrheic dermatitis?
Inflammation of the oil glands
What is Contact dermatitis?
Acute inflammation response of the skin
What is Eczema?
Chronic inflammation of the skin
What is urticaria? (Hives)
Acute allergic reaction itchy and red
What is Psoriasis?
Chronic inflammation skin condition flakey, thick silvery scales
What is Acne?
Inflammatory disease of the oil glands and hair follicles.
