Skeletal System Flashcards
The 10 Body Systems are:
Muscular Nervous Skeletal Respiratory Reproductive Cardiovascular Digestive Endocrine Urinary Integumentary Reproductive
Functions of the skeletal system
Supports our body, protects our body, provides muscle attachment for movement, creates blood cells (red, white and platelets) stores calcium and phosphorus, bones, cartilage in joints, ligaments and joints( hips, shoulder and knee)
3 Layers of bone
Periosteum, Compact bone and Cancellous (Spongy)
Periosteum is the
Thin outer lining of bone (outside)
Compact bone is
Outer layer of bone hard and strong (layer above spongy bone)
Cancellous is the
Inner layer of boneless dense (bone and marrow) spongy bone
Two types of bone marrow
Red and yellow marrow
Red marrow is
Filled with blood vessels, makes red and white blood cells and platelets.
Yellow marrow is
Containing mainly fat cells found primarily in the shafts of long bones.
Disorders of the skeletal system
Arthritis, Fracture,Gout, Osteomyelitis, Osteoporosis and Sprain.
What are the two types of arthritis?
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Wear and tear on joints (Over 40, often in larger joints hips and knees, breakdown of cartilage, bone rub against each other, causes pain, stiffness and loss of movement)
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Body attacks its own tissues. (affects anyone, smaller joints first fingers and toes, long term joint damage, loss of function, disability and chronic pain , 2-3 times more common in women and more serve in men.
Joints
Hinge Joint- Elbow Pivot Joint- Neck Saddle Joint- Thumb Condyloid Joint- Jaw Ball and Socket Joint- Shoulder Gliding Joint- Vertebra
Fracture
Broken Bones
severe pain , swelling and possible disfigurement
