Skin Flashcards
Layers of the skin
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
What is epidermal adnexae?
Down growths of epidermis into dermis and subdermis
Where do you find apocrine glands?
Armpits, groin, genitala, around anus
What do sebaceous glands secrete?
Contents of entire cells onto hair surface
What is the function of sebaceous glands
To lubricate and waterproof hairs
Where do you find sebaceous glands
Accompanying hair follicles
Where do you find eccrine glands
Everywhere
What do rete pegs do?
Anchor epidermis to the dermis
What does the dermis contain?
Fibroblasts, collagen, glycosaminoglycan matrix, sensory cells and some inflammatory cells
What do meissners corpuscles sense?
Fine touch
What do pancinian corpuscles detect
Vibration and tickle
What is the subcutis
White adipose tissue - insulates and is a shock absorber
Where are melanocytes present
In the basal layer
What do melanocytes do
Synthesise melanin and transfer to neighbouring keratinocytes via melanosomes
What stimulates melanin production
MSH - melanocyte stimulating hormone
ACTH - adrenocorticotrophic hormone
How are epidermal cells connected
Desmosomes
Where does keratin form
In the stratum granulosum
What is holocrine secretion
Where entire cells are lost as secretions
What is the composition of eccrine glands
2 layers thick
Inner secretory layer
Outer myoepithelial layer
What are the two layers of the dermis
Papillary and reticular
What does the breast contain
Myoepithelial system of ducts and lobules
What is the difference between male and breasts
Males only have ducts and no lobules
Breast lobules contain which cells
Outer myoepithelial cells (contractile)
Inner columnar epithelial (adapt to produce milk) - become vacuolated
What suppresses lactation
High levels of oestrogen and progesterone
