What are the 2 divisions of the Skeleton?
Appendicular and Axial
What does the Appendicular Skeleton consist of?
Pectoral girdle and upper appendages
arms and legs
What does the Axial Skeleton consist of?
Skull, Vertebral, and Thoracic cage
central axis of the body/up and down spine
What are the three fossas inside the cranium?
Anterior Cranial Fossa, Middle Cranial Fossa, and the Posterior Cranial Fossa
Anterior Cranial Fossa
Base of frontal bone (roof of orbit) to lesser wing of the sphenoid. Its the area for the frontal lobes of the cerebral hemispheres
Middle Cranial Fossa
From the lesser wing of the Sphenoid to the Petrous part of the temporal bone. Its the area for the temporal lobes
Posterior Cranial Fossa
From the Petrous part of the temporal bone to the internal posterior surface of the skull.
The Skull consists of what 2 bones?
Facial and Cranial bones
Cranial bones
enclosure and protect the brain (surround the brain)
Facial bones
do not come in contact with the brain, provide, and framework for the face and support the teeth
Fissure
crack; narrow, slitlike opening through a bone (opening and space)
Foramen
hole; rounded passageway through a bone (opening and space)
Articulating surfaces
joint to joint (bones that come together)
Sinus
cavity or hollow space in a bone (opening and space)
Condyle
large, smooth, rounded articulating oval structure (articulating surface)
