Anatomical terms Flashcards
Anatomic Position
Body is erect, facing forward, arms at side, palms forward (supine), and feet slightly out
(Mid) Sagittal
A body plane that is vertical (head to toe) and divides in equal left and right halves. not mirror images
Parasagittal (paramedian)
a body plan that is close to or near by (off center- para); divided into unequal left and right halves
Coronal
a body plane that is vertical (frontal)
Transverse
a body plane that divides into top and bottom halves (horizontal)
Lateral and Medial
Reference to sagittal plane
(Abduction and Adduction- movement away from midline)
Anterior = Ventral
Front
Posterior = Dorsal
back
Proximal
closer to the origin
Distal
far away from trunk (origin)
Superficial
closer to the surface; on the outside (reference to coronal plane)
Transverse plane
Deep
On the inside, underneath another structure (internal)
Transverse plane
Flexion
decreasing the angle at joint
Extension
increasing the angle at joint
Abduction
away from midline
Adduction
towards midline
Supine
body is laying up; face up
- palms: forward
Prone
body face down
- palms: posterior
Inversion
inside plantar surface facing in
Eversion
plantar surface faces out
Dorsiflexion
bring toes up
Plantarflexion
bring heel up
Cephalic
head
Frons
forehead
