Female reproductive system Flashcards
Functions of female reproduction
produce ova, secrete sex hormones, recieve spermatozoa during coitus, provide sites for fertilization, implantation and gestation, parturition (labor), and noursihment (breasts)
Primary sex organs
female gonads: ovaries produce gametes and hormones
function of secondary sex organs
structures essential for fertilization, implantation, development, parturition, and noursihment
includ external genitalia: mons pubis, labia minora and majora, clitoris
internal genitalia: uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina
secondary sex organs essential for reproduction?
not essential for reproduction but considered attractants
Similarities of male and female reproductive systems
homologous structures, gonads produce gametes and sex hormones, and latent development of reproductive organs (puberty)
homologous structures
develop from the same embryonic tissue
examples of homologous structures
testes=ovaries
glans penis=clitoris
scrotum=labia majora
spongy urethra=labia minora
membranous urethra=vaginal vestibule
bulborethral glands=vestibular glands (lubercates)
gamete production for female
ova formed during fetal life
newborn female has about 2 million oocytes that have stopped at prohase I of meiosis
by puberty 400,000 left and about 400 ovulations
menopause: eggs quit maturing
(older you are increased problem with egg)
ovary attachments
Round ligament, mesovarian, ovarian ligament, broad ligament, and uterosacral ligament
RMOBU
Rabbits Munch On Bunny Underwear
Round ligament
continuation of the ovarian ligament through the inguinal canal to the labia minora
4 layers of ovaries
Superficial epithelial layer, tunica albuginea (collagenous CT), cortex, and medulla
anatomy of ovaries
Hilum, 4 layers, and blood supply
Ovarian cycle
Primary follicle, corpus luteum, and corpus albicans
primary follicle
where egg matures (surrounds and protects egg) the follicle stays behind
corpus luteum
puts out the hormone progestrone (prepares ureter lining for implantation)
corpus albicans
if fertilization does not take place the corpus luteum becomes this
Secondary sex organs
uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, external genitalia (vulva)
gross structures of uterine tubes
fimbriae, infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus
fimbriae
finger like projections surround ovary
infundibulum
where eggs attach (think back of hand)
ampulla
corner of the infundibulum where fertilization takes place normally
