Skeletal System Vega edition Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system
Support
Protect
Movement and anchorage
Mineral Storage
Hematopoiesis
What are mature bone cells called?
Osteocytes
Describe the formation of bone?
Organic material 35% that create (flexibility) such as collagen and Jellylike material
Inorganic material 65% (hardness and durability such as Ca, Na, and PO₄³⁻)
Location and role of red marrow
Ends of long bones
Manufactures red blood cells and some white blood cells
what is the periosteum? what is it’s role?
Covering on the outside of the bone
Necessary for bone growth, repair and nutrition
Why does growth stop?
Growth stops when all the epiphyseal cartilage (also known as the growth plate) is ossified
For men and women when do they stop growing?
Females grow until about 18 years old
Males grow until about 20 to 21 years old
Name and tell me where the major joints are?
Acromioclavicular (AC), sternoclavicular (SC), scapulothoracic and glenohumeral
What are articulations?
Point of contact between two bones
What are the 3 types of joints?
Diarthroses (movable) joint
Amphiarthroses (partially movable) joints
Synarthroses (immovable) joints
Types of diarthroses joints?
Ball-and-socket joints such as the shoulder and hip (rotation)
Hinge joints (one direction) such as the knees, elbows, and fingers
Pivot joints (side to side) such as the radius, ulna, and head
Gliding joints (sliding) such as the carpels and vertebrae
Where is the cartilage located for the amphiarthroses joint?
Cartilage between their articular surfaces. examples include ribs to our spine and symphysis pubis
What are synarthroses joints connected by?
Connected by tough, fibrous connective tissue such as the adult Cranium
What are cranial joints called?
Sutures
What is rotation?
Movement around a central axis
