Skeletal System Test Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system
Protection, support, movement, makes blood, storage
2 divisions of the skeletal system
axial and appendicular
Bones in axial skeleton
skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum
Bones in appendicular skeleton
upper and lower extremities-arms, legs, pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle
Bones in pectoral girdle
scapula (shoulder blade) and clavicle (collar bone)
Bones in pelvic girdle
sacrum, pelvis, coccyx
4 ways of classifying bones
long, short, flat, irregular
3 examples of long bones
humerus, femur, fibula
3 examples of short bones
carpals, tarsals, patella
3 examples of flat bones
frontal bone, sternum, ilium
3 examples of irregular bones
vertebrae, coccyx, pubis
shaft or middle region of a long bone
diaphysis
end of a long bone
epiphysis
two minerals essential for bone formation
calcium, phosphorus
this kind of joint allows extension and retraction of an appendage (elbow, knee)
hinge joint
this joint allows for radial movement in almost any direction (hips and shoulders)
ball and socket joint
in this joint, bones slide past each other (hands, feet)
gliding joint
this kind of joint occurs when the touching surfaces of two bones have both concave and convex regions with the shapes of the two bones complementing one other and allowing a wide range of movement (thumb)
saddle joint
What is the difference between a fracture and a dislocation?
Fracture is a break in the bone
Dislocation is when a bone comes out of its joint
How is the spinal column divided?
Cervical: C1-C7 Thoracic: T1-T12 Lumbar: L1-L5 Sacral: S1-S5 Coccygeal: coccyx
What is an intervertebral disk?
a pad of cartilage in between each vertebra
physician who treats bones and bone diseases
orthopedist/osteopath
a practitioner who manipulates the patient’s spinal column to relieve pressure on nerves
chiropractor
inflammation of the joints
arthritis
what is rheumatoid arthritis?
arthritis that affects joint symmetrically (on both sides equally)
inflammation of the fluid filling sac surrounding the joint
bursitis
how does the bursa become inflamed?
injury, infection, underlying rheumatic condition
inflammation of the tendons
tendonitis
irritation of the median nerve that causes tingling and numbness of the thumb, index, and the middle fingers
carpal tunnel syndrome
