Skeletal System(Joints and Body Movements) Flashcards
Pivot Joint(Uniaxial joint)
Cylindrical surface of one bone articulates with ring of bone and ligament
- rotation around central axis
ex. atlas, axis, proximal articulation of radius and ulna
Hinge Joint(Uniaxial joint)
urface of one bone articulates with concave surface of another
- flexion and extension
ex. elbow, phalanges
Saddle Joint(biaxial joint)
ylindrical surface of one bone articulates with ring of bone and ligament
- rotation around central axis
ex. atlas, axis, proximal articulation of radius and ulna
Plane Joint(multiaxial joint)
articulating surfaces flat or slightly curved
- sliding or twisting
ex. wrist and ankle bones, sternum to clavicle
Condyloid Joint(biaxial joint)
ylindrical surface of one bone articulates with ring of bone and ligament
- rotation around central axis
ex. atlas, axis, proximal articulation of radius and ulna
Ball and Socket Joints(multiaxial joint)
ball-shapped head of one bone articulates with cup-shaped cavity of another
- all planes and rotation
- hip and shoulder
Flexion
decrease in the angle between the surfaces of articulating bones, bending the elbow or knee
Extension
increase in the angle between the surfaces of articulating bones, returns the body to anatomical position
Abduction
movement of bone away from the midline of the body, arm move away from body to straight out exception fingers and toes
Adduction
movement of bone away from the midline of the body, arm move away from body to straight out exception fingers and toes
Circumduction
movement where distal end of a bone moves in a circle while proximal end remains stable
Rotation
the movement of a bone around its own axis
Supination
movement of the forearm in which the palm of the hand moves anterior
Pronation
movement of forearm in which palm moves posterior or inferior
Dorsiflexion
movement of the sole outward or laterally
