There are 26 bones in the vertebral column and the funtions include:

  • Provides support for the body
  • Supports weight of the head
  • Helps maintain upright position
  • Holds spinal chord and provides passage way for the nerves

Name the parts of both the atlas and axis. What are the significance of both and which section of the vertebral column are they in?

A

These are both located in the cervical vertebra.

  • The Atlas: The very first vertebra which is articulated to the Occiputal bone and is responsible for keeping your head up
  • The Axis: During developement the body of the atlas fuses to the 2nd vertebra which is the “axis.” This vertebra is responsible for the movement of your neck.

The sternum is also called the breast bone. It was compared to a sword in class and the three parts of the sternum are the manubrium, body, and the xynoid process.
