Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the main function the skeletal system?
It is our body’s support structure. Gives our body its shape, allows for movement and makes blood cells & provides protection for our organs.
Name the 2 sections the skeletal system is divided into
Axial
Appendicular
How many bones do we have have all together in our body?
206 bones
How many bones do we have in our axial skeleton?
80 bones
How many bones do we have in our appendicular system?
126
How many bones consist off the sacral section in the spinal cord?
5
What are the 5 parts of the axial skeleton?
Skull
Ossicles (small bones of middle ear)
Hyoid bone of neck
Vertebra (bones of spine)
Thoracic cage (ribcage and sternum)
What does the cranium consist of?
Cranial roof
Cranial base
What does the cranial base consist of?
Frontal bones
Sphenoid bones
Ethmoid bones
Occipital bones
Pariental bones
Temporal bones
What are the auditory ossicles ?
Malleus, incus, stapes
What is special about hyoid bone?
Only floating bone in body - held in place by cartilage, ligaments and muscles
What is the vertebra?
Back bones of spine
How many vertebrae does the spinal column have? & how many regions do they split into?
Consists of 33 vertebrae split into 5 regions
How many bones consist of the cervical section in the spinal cord?
7
How many bones consist of the thoracic section in the spinal cord?
12
How many bones consist of the lumbar section in the spinal cord?
5
How many bones consist of the coccygeal section in the spinal cord?
4
What is osteoporosis?
Health condition that weakens bones making them more fragile and more likely to break. Common injuries = broken hip or broken vertebrae
What can paramedics do if they come across an open fracture?
Cover the wound with sterile dressing and can also apply pressure around wound (not over) to control any bleeding
What are all the 33 vertebrae connected by?
Intervertebral discs
Name the three arm bones
Humerus, radius, ulna
Name one of the wrist bones
Scaphoid - bone in first row of worst bones
Name the 3 phalanges that are in each finger
distal, middle and proximal phalanges.
Name 2 more wrist bones
trapezium and trapezoid
What two bones does the shoulder girdle have?
Clavicle and scapula
How many bones does the foot have?
26
What are the two lower leg bones called?
Tibia and smaller fibula
What is the femur?
Large upper leg bone that connects the lower leg bones the pelvic bone
What 3 categories do the foot bones fall into
metatarsal, tarsal, phalanges
How many bones does the foot have?
26
Where is the pelvic girdle located?
In lower part of trunk (ring like bony structure)
What are the two pelvic bones called?
sacrum and coccyx
What does the thumb only have?
Two metacarpal bones
What is the first bone of the wrist called?
Scaphoid
What is the middle wrist bone called?
Lunate
