Q

What is the pharynx? & What does it consist of?

A

Fibro muscular tube located inside middle of neck. It consist of 3 things:

Q

What is the Larynx?

A

(The voice box) - Hollow tube in middle of neck, just above trachea and esophagus - it lets air pass from throat to trachea on way to lungs.

10
Q

What does the epiglottis do?

A

Guards the entrance of the glottis, for breathing it is held anteriorly then it is pulled backward to close off the glottic opening during swallowing.

Q

What is the trachea?

A

Made up of many C - shaped rings of cartilage which supports and allows the trachea to move and flex when we breathe

16
Q

What is the primary gas exchange site?

A

Alveolus

17
Q

What are Type I alveolar cells

A

Allow for exchange of gases with the pulmonary capillaries

18
Q

What are Type II alveolar cells?

A

They secrete substance called surfactant - that prevents collapse of alveoli during exhalation

19
Q

What is pulmonary ventilation?

A

Movement of air between the atmosphere and the alveoli

20
Q

What is external respiration?

A

(pulmonary) gas exchange between the alveoli and the blood

21
Q

What is internal respiration?

A

(tissue) gas exchange between the systemic capillaries and the tissue of the body

22
Q

What is oxyhemoglobin?

A

The bound form of haemoglobin with oxygen in the blood

23
Q

What is exhalation?

A

Passive process caused by elastic recoil of the lungs

24
Q

Where is the rhythmicity centre for respiration?

A

In the medulla

25
Q

With which body system does the respiratory system work to regulate the pH of body fluids?

A

Urinary system

26
Q

What are the three parts of the pharynx?

A

Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Hypopharynx

27
Q

What does the right lung consist of?

A

Upper lobe
Middle lobe
Lower lobe

28
Q

How can paramedics treat asthma ?

A

By providing extra oxygen through either a mask or a tube attached to the nose.
