Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous Systems Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system (5)
- provide framework
- protect internal organs
- provide red blood cells
- movement
- stores minerals
How many bones does the human body have?
206 bones
2 main groups of the skeletal system:
- axial skeleton (80): main trunk- skull, spine, ribs, vertebrae, sternum, breast bone
- appendicular skeleton (126): extremitis- upper/lower limbs, shoulders, hips
what are the bones made up of?
protein called collagen and minerals
2 types of skeletal tissues:
compact and spongy bone
tissue that fills the spaces of the bone
marrow
2 kinds of marrow
red and yellow
produces blood cells to the bone (100 billion per day)
red
store fat
yellow
4 types of bone:
- long: legs, arms, etc
- short: wrist, ankles, etc
- flat: skull, shoulder blade
- irregular: face, vertebrae
Strong, flexible connective tissue in joints (serves as cushion)
Cartilage
The process by which bone is formed, renewed, and repaired
ossification
4 Types of Joints:
- ball and socket: hip/shoulder
- hinge: elbow, knee, ankle, fingers
- pivot: head-turn neck
- ellipsoidal: “gliding” wrist
elastic connective tissue that attaches bone to bone
ligament
fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone
tendon
how to take care of skeletal system? (4)
- regular exercise
- lots of vitamin D
- minerals (calcium & phosphorus)
- protective gear
skeletal problems: (3)
- fracture: break in the bones
- Osteoporosis: progressive loss of bone tissue
- Scoliosis: a lateral, or side to side, curvature of the spine
bone does not break in the skin
closed/simple fracture
bone protruded through the skin
open/compound fracture
largest bone
femur (upper leg)
smallest bone
auditory ossicles (middle ear)
easiest bone to break
collar bone
How many muscles is there in a human body?
approximately 650 muscle
Functions of Muscular system: (4)
- help you breathe
- make your heart beat
- move food through digestive system
- body movement
