Skeletal and muscular systems Flashcards
How many types of synovial joint can you name?
Hinge, Condyloid, Pivot, Gliding, Saddle, Ball and Socket
Define the movement of Flexion
Flexion is the decrease in the angle of a joint in the sagittal plane
Define the movement of Extension
Extension if the increase in the angle of a joint in the sagittal plane
What is the difference between abduction and adduction?
Abduction is the movement of a body part away from the middle of the frontal plane; adduction is the movement of a body part towards the middle of the body in the frontal plane
Define the movement of horizontal extension
Horizontal extension is the movement of a body part away from the middle of the body when moving parallel to the ground in the transverse plane
Define the movement of horizontal flexion
Horizontal Flexion is movement of a body part toward the middle of the body when moving parallel to the ground in the transverse plane
What is medial rotation?
Medial rotation is the circular movement of a joint toward the midline of the body
What is lateral rotation?
Lateral rotation is the circular movement of a joint away from the midline of the body
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is a circular movement of a limb or body part that’s actually more like a cone shape. It’s a combination of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction that happens at a joint.
E.g. cricket bowl
A cricketer bowling a cricket ball is an example of what type of movement at the shoulder joint?
Circumduction or Rotation
Locate 3 main hinge joints found in the body
Hinge joints can be found at the elbow, knee and ankle
Name 2 major muscles at the elbow
Tricep Brachii and Bicep Brachii
Give a sporting example of flexion and extension performed at the elbow
Where is the pivot joint typically located?
The neck
Where is the gliding joint typically located?
The spine
