What is Single Line Working
When the traffic of a double line is worked over a single line due to obstruction or repairs
How many trains can move through a SLW area at a time?
Only one

What is the object of SLW
In a double line system, where one line is closed due to repair or obstruction and the other line is used in both directions

What authority do you need to enter a SLW area?
You need PERSONAL permission of the Pilot who is acting under instruction from the Signaller
How do you identify the Pilot?
HE wears a red badge with the word PILOTMAN in white letters on HIS left arm above the elbow.
A red flag may be used instead.
What aspect do the signals controlling entry to the Single Line Section show?
They are Sleeved at Stop
Can the Pilot give you authority to exit the single line section?
NO
Authority is given by either a Fixed Signal or a Hand Signaller, both under the control of the Controlling Signaller.
When traversing a crossover that is now a facing set of points instead of a trailing set of points, what speed must you do?
15kmh
What speed do you travel during SLW and what do you do?
Reduced Speed Cautiously
Frequent use of Whistle
Except for first train when SLW rules aren’t in place yet. You may have to stop and let Pilot on and off but you can do track speed.
During SLW if it is dark, you are travelling in the wrong direction, during inclement weather, or when passing through tunnels what must you do?
Display Red Marker Lights on the front of train (Hazard lights if fitted)
During SLW when running in non-signalled direction, what speed must you do if crossing a LVX?

In SLW on the line under repair or obstructed what is placed at both ends of that line?
A red hand signal at least 400m from the point of work.
In SLW during Absolute Occupation, what is placed at both ends of that line?
A red hand signal is placed at the entrance to the area of Absolute Occupation. The Flag Signaller will place 3 ATWS, 10 metres apart.
