Simple Reflexes Flashcards
Define neural reflexes
Strereotyped, involuntary and rapid reactions of CNS to specific sensory input
Describe the Neural Components/Reflex arc
Sensory receptors - Afferent neurones - CNS - CNS Modulation or Efferent neurones - Effector
NB: Afferent can go directly to Efferent
What is CNS Modulation
Tells brain what to do in an involuntary reflex
NB: Brain can still override reflex arc
What is the purpose of a stretch reflex
Adjusts degree of muscle contraction for posture
What happens when muscle spindle stretches
Increase sensory = increase AP = increase motor = increase contraction
What can interneurones do
Produce inhibitory/excitatory neurotransmitter
What is the purpose of the golgi tendon organ reflex
Prevent damage due to overwork
Fine control of muscle tension
What is the common factor in the knee jerk reflex and crossed extensor reflex
Both reflexes involve inhibitory neurotransmitters to a muscle and excitatory neurotransmitters to another muscle to coordinate movement
