Histology Of Nervous Tissue Flashcards
What is anterograde transport? And what is needed?
From perikaryon to synaptic terminal.
Kinesin = microtubule activated ATPase
What is needed by the perikaryon for synthesis of structural proteins and proteins for transport and secretion?
Euchromatic nucleus and Nissl bodies
What is retrograde transport? And what is needed?
From periphery to cell body.
Dynein = microtubule activated ATPase
Why are glial cells needed?
Neurones cannot support themselves
What are oligodendrocytes? How do they look?
Produce myelin for more than 1 CNS axon
Rounded, condensed nuclei and unstained cytoplasm
What are astrocytes like in White matter?
Fibrous astrocytes with long processes
What are astrocytes like in grey matter?
Protoplasmic astrocyte = short and branched
What is the role of astrocytes?
Formation of CNS, controlling ionic env, BBB, repair processes, secrete metabolites
Structural and metabolic support for Neurones
How do ependymal cells look like?
Columnar/cuboidal that line ventricles of brain and central canal of SC that May have cilia to waft CSF
What are microglia?
Migrating short irregular processes that secrete immunoregulatory cytokines
Euchromatic elongated nuclei
What are neurolemmocytes?
Forms myelin over one segment of PNS axon
Protect unmyelinated neurone
Separate axons from each other
What does microglia develop into in an immune response
Macrophages
Where is the cell body in motor and sensory Neurones
Motor = in CNS Sensory = in PNS
What is the BBB?
Basal lamina of capillaries enveloped by perivascular feet of astrocytes to regulate passage
What is the choroid plexus?
Remove H2O from blood and release it as CNS
