Simple Machines Flashcards
What is the inclined plane’s purpose?
It spreads the force needed to raise or lower a load over a large distance
What two simple machines are similar to the inclined plane?
Wedges and screws
How does the shallowness of the slope affect the force needed?
The shallower the slope, the less force is needed to move a load
What is a wedge?
Two back-to-back inclined planes
What is the wedge’s purpose?
It reduces the amount of force needed to separate two objects
What is a screw?
An inclined plane that circles an axis
What type of motion does the screw release when it is hung turned?
Helical motion
What type of motion does the screw’s thread transform?
It transforms rotational motion into translation motion.
What is a first class lever and what is its purpose?
- fulcrum in the middle (EFR)
- always moves in the opposite direction of the force
What is a second class lever and what is its purpose?
- resistance in the middle (ERF)
- puts distance between the effort and resistance
What is a third class lever and what is its purpose?
- effort in the middle (REF)
- reduces force applied to the load
