Q

What is a gear train and what is its function?

A

It is made up of small toothed wheels called gears that transmit rotational motion. It is used to increase or decrease the speed of a motion inside a technological object.

Q

How close can pulleys be placed and what happens if too much force is exerted?

A

Pulleys can be placed far apart like they are on a clothesline. If too much force is exerted, the best can slip off the pulleys

Q

What is a chain and sprocket wheels and what motion is transmitted by it?

A

It is made up of toothed or sprocket wheels connected by a chain. Rotational motion is transmitted by the teeth in the wheels, which fit into the loops of the chain.

Q

What is good about the chain not being able to slip off the sprocket wheels and what is a consequence of this?

A

The chain cannot slip off of the sprocket wheels so much more force can be used however, all pieces must be lubricated

Q

Why would it be better to use a chain and sprocket wheels instead of a pulley and belt to use a lot of force? What is the problem with using a chain and sprocket wheels?

A

Using a pulley and belt, the belt can slip off if too much force is exerted. Using chain and sprocket wheels, the chain cannot slip off the sprocket wheels allowing more force to be used but all parts must be lubrictaed

Q

Explain how I‎t works give an example of what the rack and pinion is.

A

It’s made up of a toothed wheel (pinion) and a straight toothed rod called a rack. When the pinion spins, I‎t moves the rack because the teeth of the two parts fit into each other.
An example is some tennis nets have a rack and pinion system

Q

Explain the parts and motions of the connecting rod and crank.

A

The Crank rotates (rotational motion)
Connecting rod is a bar attached to the crank
Connected with a piston that performs a translational motion.
The rotational motion of the crank is turned into the translational motion of the piston.
