Buoyancy Flashcards
What is buoyancy?
The force acting opposite the direction of gravity that affects all objects submerged in a fluid
What is the formula for buoyancy?
Fb= Vs X P X g
What does Fb represent?
Buoyancy force
What does Vs represent?
Submerged volume (always measured in meters!)
What does P represent?
The density of the fluid the object is submerged in (kg/L)
What does g represent?
The gravity force (9.81N)
How do you get the full force that is pushing downwards?
You multiply the gravity force (9.81N) by the mass of the object
If the gravity is greater it…
Sinks
If the buoyant force is greater it…
Floats
Positively buoyant:
> 9.81N (floats)
Negatively buoyant:
<9.81N (sinks)
Neutral buoyancy:
=9.81N (suspended in fluid)
